Canadian Experience Class After Studying in Canada
How the Canadian Experience Class works for former international students, why it often produces stronger CRS scores than applying from abroad, and what qualifies as eligible experience.
Why CEC fits the student pathway well
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is one of the three programs managed through Express Entry, and it's specifically designed for candidates who already have skilled work experience gained inside Canada — which makes it a natural fit for former international students who worked under a PGWP after graduating.
Because CEC applicants typically also hold a Canadian education credential and often stronger language scores from years living and working in Canada, CRS scores under this pathway tend to run higher than a comparable applicant applying from outside the country with only foreign experience and education.
What counts as eligible experience
- At least one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience within the three years before applying
- Experience must be in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation — TEER 4 and 5 roles do not qualify
- Experience must have been gained with authorized status to work in Canada — unauthorized work does not count and can create separate admissibility problems
- Experience can be gained across multiple employers or roles, as long as it adds up to the required duration in eligible occupations
The PGWP-to-CEC bridge
This is where the study pathway comes together: a PGWP provides open work authorization, which lets a graduate accumulate the qualifying year of skilled experience needed for CEC eligibility. Because the PGWP is open (not employer-restricted), graduates have real flexibility in choosing a role that both pays reasonably and cleanly qualifies at TEER 0–3 — worth prioritizing over a slightly higher-paying role that might be misclassified at TEER 4.
No proof of funds requirement
CEC applicants are exempt from the Express Entry proof of funds requirement, on the logic that a year of Canadian work experience already demonstrates income capacity. This is a meaningful practical advantage over applying under the Federal Skilled Worker Program from abroad.
