Express Entry Draw Types Explained

IRCC invites candidates from the Express Entry pool through periodic draws, and since 2023 these have split into two distinct types: general draws, which invite the highest-CRS-scoring candidates in the pool regardless of occupation, and category-based draws, which target candidates who meet specific criteria set by the Minister of Immigration each year, often with a lower CRS cutoff than the general pool.

This matters strategically because a candidate with a moderate CRS score who would never be reached in a general draw can still receive an invitation if they qualify for an active category.

If your occupation and qualifications align with an active category, it's often worth building your Express Entry profile with that category in mind — accurate NOC classification, appropriate language testing (French testing in particular, for the French-language category, even for otherwise English-dominant applicants), and documentation that clearly demonstrates category eligibility.

Category priorities are set annually and can change from year to year based on labor market needs, so a category active this year isn't guaranteed to remain active going forward. This is genuinely one of the more dynamic parts of the Express Entry system to track.

The current list of active categories, their specific eligibility criteria, and recent cutoff scores are published and updated by IRCC directly.
