IELTS vs CELPIP for Immigration: Which to Choose
Both are IRCC-approved English tests for immigration purposes. Here's how they differ in format, and how CLB levels are derived from either one.
Both are valid — the choice is about fit
IELTS General Training and CELPIP General are both accepted by IRCC for Express Entry and most other immigration applications requiring English proficiency. Neither is inherently "worth more" in CRS terms — what matters is your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) equivalency, and both tests convert to CLB levels using published conversion tables. The right choice is about which test format suits you, not which one scores better.
Format differences
- IELTS is administered in a mix of paper-based and computer-delivered formats depending on test center, with a separate in-person speaking interview with a live examiner
- CELPIP is fully computer-delivered, including the speaking section, which is recorded rather than conducted face-to-face — some candidates find this less stressful, others prefer a live conversational format
- CELPIP is Canadian-English-focused and only offered for English (no French equivalent); IELTS is administered globally and more widely recognized outside immigration contexts (e.g., academic admissions)
- Test center availability differs by location — CELPIP centers are less widespread outside Canada, which matters for US-based applicants who may need to travel further to test
How CLB levels are derived
Each test's raw band scores (IELTS) or level scores (CELPIP) are converted to CLB levels separately for each of the four abilities — reading, writing, listening, speaking — using IRCC's published equivalency charts. Because CRS points and program eligibility are based on CLB levels, not raw test scores, an IELTS band 7 and a CELPIP score that maps to the equivalent CLB level are treated identically in scoring, even though they look different on paper.
What to actually decide on
For US-based applicants, practical factors — test center availability near you, comfort with computer-delivered vs. in-person speaking, and how soon you can get a test date — often matter more than any theoretical scoring edge, because there isn't a meaningful one.
