Study Permit Renewal and Extension: A Practical Guide

October 2026·6 min read

Study permits do not renew automatically. When to apply, what to include, and how to protect your status while a decision is pending.

Apply before expiry

If you want to remain in Canada as a student after your permit expires, you must apply to extend before it ends. A timely application generally allows you to continue under maintained status while IRCC decides, subject to the conditions of your original permit.

The study permit and the program length are not always aligned. A permit may expire before you finish, especially if the program was extended or you changed courses. Check the date on your permit against your expected completion date well in advance.

What to include

  • Proof of continued enrolment
  • Evidence of satisfactory academic progress
  • Updated proof of funds
  • A valid passport and any other documents IRCC asks for
  • An explanation of any gaps or changes in your studies

When things go wrong

If you let the permit lapse, IRCC allows an application to restore status within 90 days in the situations its guides describe, but you cannot study or work until restoration is approved, and the consequences can be significant. The guide to restoration of status explains the basics. Better still is to set a reminder well before the expiry date.

Poor academic progress can also affect an extension. If you have failed courses or taken a leave, address it directly with a clear explanation and supporting documents.

Protecting your plans

An extension is not just paperwork. It protects your eligibility for later benefits, including a post-graduation work permit, because those depend on holding valid status and meeting the conditions of your permit throughout your studies.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I keep studying while my extension is processed? Usually yes, under maintained status, if you applied before your permit expired and you continue to meet its conditions. If the application is refused, that right ends.
  • If I change schools, do I need to report it? Reporting is not enough. IRCC says you need to get a new study permit by applying to extend your current one before you start at the new designated learning institution, with a new provincial attestation letter unless you are exempt. Since November 8, 2024, you generally must have the new permit before you start; IRCC allows starting early only in narrow cases, such as your previous school losing its designation.
  • Can I leave Canada while the extension is pending? Travel can complicate matters, including your ability to re-enter in the same status. Get advice before leaving while an application is pending.

A worked example

A hypothetical student changes her program mid-way, extending her studies by a semester. She forgets that her permit expires before the new completion date. A friend reminds her, and she applies to extend several weeks before the expiry, with a letter from her school confirming her enrolment and progress.

Because she applied on time, she can continue studying under maintained status while the decision is pending. Her friend, in a similar situation, waited until after the permit expired and had to deal with a much more stressful process. Applying early is a simple habit with large consequences.

How to prepare over the next 30 days

  • Check your permit’s expiry date against your expected completion date
  • Request an enrolment letter and transcript from your school
  • Update your proof of funds
  • Note any changes to your program or school that need to be reported
  • Set reminders well ahead of the expiry date
